Garlic is a plant in the family Allium (onion) and is closely related to onions, shallots and leeks. It grows in many parts of the world and is a popular ingredient in cooking. Garlic is one of the medicinal plants that have always been considered indispensable, as it is endowed with endless health properties. Its use was well documented by major civilizations including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese.
Garlic occurs as a herbaceous plant 30 to 80 cm tall, which in its wild state is perennial, while cultivated it propagates exclusively by vegetative means because of its sterility. Garlic possesses a hypogean part consisting mainly of the bulb, which is covered with reddish involucres and consists in turn of numerous smaller bulbs, the spicules, which provide the drug, that is, the part used in phytotherapy.
