Description
Spirulina algae
Spirulina algae has been known to local populations for hundreds of years. At one time women used to take this plant during pregnancy.
Scientifically known by the name of Arthrospira (Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima), of the Cyanophiaceae family, it has a green-blue color and a spiral shape, from which its name also derives.
Spirulina algae was cultivated mainly at Lake Chad, by the Aztecs and lives mainly in the alkaline waters of sub-tropical areas.
Spirulina has multiple nutritional and therapeutic properties thanks to the substances contained in it:
- Thanks to the rich presence of vitamins, spirulina is very good for the eye, nervous system, heart and remineralizes the bones. It is a useful algae for the immune system, antioxidant and immunostimulating. In particular, it contains vitamins: A, D, K and B vitamins which, together with the proteins contained in the seaweed, have a strong toning and energizing action.
- Fights osteoporosis, celiac disease and Chron's disease.
- It helps to restore the acid-base balance by making the tissues more alkaline: it is in fact among the alkaline foods.
- The high presence of phenylalanine reduces the sense of hunger. Being a complete food, rich in vitamins and mineral salts (iron, sodium, magnesium, manganese, calcium, iodine and potassium) provides the right nutritional intake and also to pregnant and lactating women.
The spirulina algae also...
- It contains all 8 essential amino acids (Phenylalanine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Valine).
- Contains carbohydrates including rhamnose and glycogen
- It contains essential fatty acids. Omega 3 and omega 6 that go to counteract cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
To benefit from the properties of this alga it is necessary to use it with caution by taking it initially in minimal doses and then gradually increasing in such a way as to accustom the body without running the risk of causing undesirable effects.
The amount of spirulina to be taken ranges between 1g and 5g per day.
